Set to star in one of the evening’s supermatches, the rivals Caio Terra and Jeff Glover have agreed between them to face off in the gi and without weight limits at the Jiu-Jitsu Expo, coming up on the 12th.

These ingredients may make the supermatch between the diminutive submission wizards all the better. We’ll leave it to Caio to explain, through this message he sent in to the mega event’s promoters.

“Even though I like Gi as much as No-Gi, it makes no sense for me to have a No-Gi match two weeks prior to the IBJJF Worlds. Even though Jeff hasn’t competed in awhile, he understood that it might affect my performance at one or both events and sent me a polite message inviting me to make the change, so we made a deal. As he agreed on competing with the gi, I agreed on having no weight limit. I believe this will make the fight more interesting, as Jeff won’t need to suffer from the cut and a little guy in the absolute is always fun to watch. I think the public was the one who most benefited from this, and as Jeff has told me, we will make this an epic fight, with both of us looking for the submission”, wrote Caio Terra.

Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares lost to Alan Belcher last Saturday, at UFC on FOX 3, in New Jersey, United States. Brazilian Top Team athlete, Palhares was defeated by TKO on the last seconds of the first round, and talked about the bout’s outcome on his Twitter. Humble as always, he recognized his opponent’s superiority on the fight.

“Yesterday my opponent was better. Now I’ll do what I always do and I’ll train to be happy again”, wrote Palhares.

The defeat to Belcher put an end to the good phase the Brazilian has been going through. He came from a 30win streak and had his eyes on the middleweight title.

If you can’t make it to Long Beach, California, on the 12th of May, you won’t get to polish up your gentle-art skills under the expert eyes of the likes of Roger Gracie, André Galvão, Robert Drysdale, Rodrigo Comprido and Ronaldo Jacaré. Nor will you get to put on a show of your own at the inaugural IBJJF Spring Open, another monumental attraction to feature at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo. But that doesn’t mean you’re excluded from the action at the Long Beach Convention Center altogether.

The all star cast on the supermatch card likely has UFC president Dana White burning with envy, and you can watch all the Gi and No-Gi action streamed live over the internet via mobileblackbelt.tv.

While the main event is a must-see, with UFC superstar Nick Diaz putting his black belt and incisive rubber-guard to a stern test in a No-Gi bout with ADCC superchampion Bráulio Estima, the rest of the card is no less riveting:

Three of the Jiu-Jitsu royal family’s top competitors will be defending the Gracie name: Pan 2012 champ with the tentacular guard Kayron Gracie will have his work cut out for him in the gi against Rafael Lovato Jr., the man who made history when he became the first black belt to win the European Open, Pan-American, Brazilian National, and World Championships all in the same year; the son of gentle-art legend Rickson Gracie, Kron Gracie will don his gi and seek revenge for his loss to Victor Estima at this year’s Pan-American Championship; while multiple world- and ADCC-title holder Kyra Gracie will have a bout of grappling with Alexis Davis, an MMA fighter on the Strikeforce roster.

Rounding out the six-match card are two intriguing rematches: Nino Schembri, a decorated world champion who is further distinguished by his knockout of Kazushi Sakuraba during Pride FC’s heyday, will be looking for redemption for his 2010 defeat at the hands of Paragon BJJ’s Bill Cooper (watch it here); and sparks are bound to fly in the No-Gi grudge match between 2007 No-Gi world champion Jeff Glover  and the only four-time winner of the No-Gi World Championship, Caio Terra.

Glamor, dazzling matches, surprises, rivalry, controversy—the tourney had it all, and the result of this explosive and exciting formula was Nivaldo Oliveira getting crowned the new king of the Brazilian Nationals. Amid so many favorites, CheckMat rep Nil made it through unscathed and captured gold at both weight and in the absolute. Nivaldo, who has been coming up with solid results for some time now, will be going into the Worlds at full throttle.

The campaign began on Saturday, when Nil secured his place in the final of the absolute. At medium heavyweight, on Sunday, the black belt had four matches, taking on the likes of Yan Cabral, who he beat by disqualification, and Rômulo Barral, who he outdid on advantage points. In the grand decider, Nivaldo had his work cut out for him against Willian Martins, who had a 4-2 lead over him from sweeps up until the eighth minute, whe Martins was caught off guard by a snug kneebar. Nivaldo didn’t need to go through with the final of the absolute division, as his teammate Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” was there to close out with him.

ROOSTER WARRIOR

The first of Sunday’s finals took place at 4:20 pm. At that very moment, just a few kilometers away, Botafogo and Fluminense were playing to determine the winner of the Rio de Janeiro soccer championship, and not long later Santos and Guarani would do the same for the state of São Paulo. But at Grajaú Country Club and all across Brazil, keeping up over Twitter, attention was turned to Jiu-Jitsu. Igor dos Santos of CheckMat and Felipe Costa kicked off the series of decisive matches. Igor landed a sweep, and when Felipe attempted to recover, he pounced for a spot-on kneebar.

“I came from Búzios to train with Ricardo Vieira. Over there I teach 120 people at a goodwill project. I get on the bus and come all the way here to Rio to train,” said a jubilant Igor after his three matches for the day were done.

WHO’S TIAGO?

Haven’t heard of him? He’s José Tiago, another from Cícero Costha’s stable of fearless students. He’s been having a string of narrow misses, but he came up spades in triumphant fashion in the light featherweight division at the Brazilian Nationals. He got the tapout in his first three matches—by wristlock, kneebar and a choke from the back—and in the final as well, facing the favored Ary Farias. He took it to Ary from the get-go. He passed guard, took his back and finished up with a choke.

“I’d lost to Ary in the final in 2008, when we were purple belts. I also took second when we were browns. This time I managed to win it,” said Tiago in celebration.

SAGGIORO’S TIME

Last year, Leonardo Saggioro hit a wall in the final, against Bruno Frazatto. This time the student of Ricardo Marques, the teacher who produced the black belt Bernardo Faria, secured top spot. In doing so, “Cascão”, as he’s known, submitted the four opponents he had in his way, three of them via triangle and the fourth by choke from back mount. The triangle was what he used in the early minutes of the final, against David Lemes. From the stands, the man who beat him last year could only watch, as Bruno Frazatto had been sidelined by the flu; but another encounter with Saggioro may arise at the Worlds. Promise of a great match.

LO DID IT AGAIN

The current champ defended his perch, as Leandro Lo wreaked havoc at lightweight and again overcame Michael Langhi in the final. It was an evenly matched affair, where Lo landed a sweep early on and withstood Langhi’s attempts to reciprocate, to win by 2-0. Earlier on, on his way to the final, he managed a choke from the back and an americana lock from side-control. Leandro is yet another from Cícero Costha’s brood to capture gold at the Brazilian Nationals, and having also won this year’s Pan, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with at the Worlds.

FLAWLESS VICTORY

ALEXANDRO CECONI

First, Alexandro Ceconi got the tapout with a choke from side-control, then he did it again, and in the semifinal his opponent, Antonio Ricardo, got injured and had to pull out from the match. In the decider he met up with game CheckMat rep Paulo Tarcisio, who was a finalist one year prior. After a brief period standing, Ceconi brought on the pressure on the ground. He made it to side-control and scored 2-0 with a knee-on-belly.

ALLIANCE DOUBLE WHAMMY

Léo Nogueira and Bernardo Faria dominated the super heavyweight division. Bernardo beat two opponents by submission, one a choke from the back and the next a kneebar. But gold went to Nogueira, the current world champion and winner at weight and open weight at the 2011 Brazilian Nationals. Nogueira got the finish in his first match via wristlock from side-control, then he made it past Pan weight and open weight champ “Cara de Sapato”.

“I scored an advantage and passed at the tail end, but I don’t know if there was time left for it to get computed,” he recounted. “I saw the predictions on GRACIEMAG.com, and I wasn’t picked. That just fueled my drive to win,” said Léo jokingly.

DANISH CHAMPION OF BRAZIL

Having won everything there is to win in the lower belt ranks, Alexander Trans has been on a tear as a black belt. He won the European Championship this season and had a repeat of the final from Lisbon in Rio de Janeiro, against Nova União’s Thiago Gaia. Thiago happened to star in one of the biggest matches of the day, overcoming Leonardo Leite. The final was an evenly matched affair, tied on advantage points up until the last few seconds, when Danish national Trans notched another advantage point.

“My first match was against Vitor Hugo, a really tough athlete, and I won on advantages. Then I took on Antonio Peinado and managed to sweep and pass guard,” he recounted.

HEATED COMBAT BETWEEN THE LADIES

CheckMat’s Michelle Nicolini provided some great moments. She ended up losing to Talita Treta of Ryan Gracie in the super heavyweight division, one of the finest and most exciting matches of the day. Treta got two takesdowns; Michelle, two sweeps. And in the last few minutes Treta got the sweep to secure victory by a score of 6 to 4.

In the final of the absolute, Michelle faced Fernanda Mazelli of Striker team and came out on top by 7-2.

At light featherweight, Bruna do Nascimento got two sweeps and then finished Bibiana Silva with an armbar. At featherweight, Marina Ribeiro of CheckMat swept and then finished Michelle Tavares of Gracie Humaitá via triangle. Luiza Monteiro swept Barbara Gomes and then finished with a kneebar at lightweight. At medium heavyweight, Fernanda Mazelli took Edika Correia of Brazilian Fight down for the win.

The American Francisco Santos Miranda, known as Frank Mir, is excited about his second chance at the title, which happens on May 26th, against Junior dos Santos, in Las Vegas. On an exclusive interview with TATAME, he talked about his expectations for fighting the Brazilian and remind some important facts in his career and denies his fame of being arrogant.

“Sometimes I think people rather see a fighter saying ‘oh Jesus, I’m so glad, I can’t believe I won, I’ve never been that good, I’m not that good…”

Were you surprised to be chosen as the next contender at Junior’s title replacing Overeem?

To be hones, I wasn’t surprised at all. Obviously I heard Dana’s version and in my mind I don’t think they’d put another person instead of me to fight Junior dos Santos. However, I thought that, maybe, Cigano wanted to wait until the trial to understand if Overeem would be able to fight and, putting it all together, I thought there would be a great chance I wouldn’t fight for the title, but it never happened and here I am.

Were were getting prepared to fight Cain Velasquez and now will have at chance at the title. How does it change your prep and game plan?

It does change things a little, but not everything. I don’t think I have to worry about Cain’s punches, because like he knows Boxing I know takedowns and I can submitt opponents on the floor. Junior dos Santos is always submitting people on their feet and he’s a better boxer, but that’s all he brings to this scenario. He may be good at Jiu-Jitsu, he can be a great wrestler, but his strongest point is Boxing, so his game plan is not to be on his punching zone so he won’t find me. To me Velasquez was more deceiving because he might try to knock you down like he did with Nogueira or he would be able to take you down and submit you like a striker, like he’s done with other fighters before.

Do you think Junior dos Santos will try to revenge Nogueira’s defeat when fighting you?

I guess he’s only fighting me because I’m trying to take that belt off him. I guess it means much more than trying to revenge Nogueira’s loss to me. I know it would be nice for him if he could win this fight and come back having revenged his friend’s loss, but in the end of the say he will be more focused on fighting me for his own reasons, afterall, he wants to remain as the champion.

Do you believe it’s the toughest fight in your career?

It’s hard to say because I only started studying Dos Santos a week ago. But I guess so. It’s our first fight and I guess he’s one of the most dangerous strikers I’ve ever fought.

You are a black belt gradutated by Sergio Penha. How did you guys meet?

He’s a great friend of mine and was the first guy to ever teach me Jiu-Jitsu. I looked for his gym to try to learn the sport and he was living in Las Vegas for a while.

After becoming UFC champion you had to take a break due to a bike accident. Even though you turned it around and started fighting again. Do you remember that time?

 I remember trying to come back and overcome the injury and all a fighter does is trying to deal with everyday’s obstacles. I remember how I got my leg broken, it was a pretty ugly accident, and I could only think about my healing process. Hard moments. There were many fights on which I couldn’t really punch the guys and I end up losing – if I was healthy I could have a better performance. Most times I felt like if I had been hit in the face, but I had the support and the guts to keep on going. Now I’m going for my second title shot even after I had my leg broken.

Have you considered stop fighting for good?

Yeah. When I returned to the octagon, the first fights I felt very stressed out, especially because my family was going there and watching me trying to get back in my feet – and it seems I was able to keep on going because I was healed from the injuries. To me it’s very important the father-husband role and it comes first. So, since I was dedicating my life to fighting and I didn’t have so much time to perform m other roles I really focused on fighting. And I would’ve stopped if it wasn’t my wife and my family backing me up.

Many fans say you seem arrogant, mainly Brazilians. What do you think about that?

I guess they say it because I’m so self-confident. Sometimes I think people rather see a fighter saying ‘oh Jesus, I’m so glad, I can’t believe I won, I’ve never been that good, I’m not that good’. I never had that kinda thought, especially because I was always so focused in getting into the octagon and compete. I fought many guys who think like that and due to my self-confidence I get to their nerves. But those who are arrogant can’t understand themselves, they think their qualities are bigger than they really are. I, on the other hand, am only confident about what I know I can really do.

Have you been to Brazil? What are your thoughts?

Yes. It’s very beautiful over there. I loved the weather, the humidity, people were friendly, nice and it seemed like a family giving their welcome to me. I loved the country and even told my wife we could take the kids there someday.

If you could say something to Junior dos Santos right now, what would it be?

Nothing. I guess we’re having our private chat on the octagon on May 26th.
